The Wine Industry is Hiring Less and the Stakes Have Never Been Higher
The wrong hire has always been expensive. In today’s wine industry, I am here to tell you that it can be a setback your business can’t afford.
The latest reporting from WineBusiness Monthly paints a clear picture: hiring is cooling, teams are getting leaner, and compensation continues to rise. Its October 2026 issue highlights a striking contradiction. While wineries are cutting back on headcount, average industry pay increased 4.8% this year. At the same time, recent NielsenIQ data shows wine dollar sales declining 2.1% and volume falling 4.1% year over year during the four weeks ending October 3.
The industry is under pressure. But the need for exceptional talent hasn’t disappeared. It’s become more consequential.
THE REAL COST ISN’T THE HIRE. IT’S GETTING IT WRONG
When teams are leaner, every leadership decision carries more weight. A sales executive who can’t build distribution momentum. A DTC leader who struggles to turn visitation into loyalty. A general manager who can’t align people, performance and profitability. These aren’t simply staffing challenges. They’re business challenges. And the cost of getting them wrong extends far beyond compensation. In a market demanding more from fewer people, the right hire isn’t overhead. It’s a competitive advantage.
THAT’S WHERE INTERTWINE CHANGES THE EQUATION
At Intertwine Group, we don’t approach recruiting as a résumé exercise. We approach it as a business decision. With more than 25 years of recruiting experience, deep roots in Napa Valley, and an established network across wine, spirits and hospitality, we understand the intersection of talent, culture and commercial performance.
Our Precision Talent Matching System goes beyond qualifications to evaluate leadership capability, technical expertise, cultural alignment and long-term potential.
We also connect clients with exceptional professionals who may never appear in a conventional applicant pool. And our performance-based recruiting model means clients pay a placement fee only when they hire, backed by our placement guarantee.
YOUR 2027 STRATEGY IS ONLY AS STRONG AS THE PEOPLE EXECUTING IT
As organizations finalize priorities for 2027, the question is no longer simply how many people they need. It’s whether they have the right people in the roles that matter most. The wine industry doesn’t need more résumés. It needs more of the right decisions, and that’s our business.
